Hi, I am writing this guide because of my heartbreaking experience trying to move my high-end gaming pc which I had painstakingly assembled. You can guess by now where this is going, I ended up with a cracked 144hz monitor and the motherboard soaked in alcohol. I ended up spending thousands of rupees (Indian currency) and never felt as guilty as I did then. So here I am, trying to prevent others from the same misery I caused for myself.
Top 5 things to remember while moving expensive gaming gear across cities!
1. Moving a gaming setup is NOT the same as moving furniture or cutlery!
Please do not treat them the same. You not only have to protect the outside components but also make sure you prevent the components inside from dismantling. Do not treat your CPU as one unit but more like a jigsaw puzzle where if you’re moving the puzzle from one table to another, you make sure the pieces don’t fall apart. Especially in high-end CPU, where they prioritize cooling, lots of empty spaces are present in between the parts. Stuff it with thermocol or bubble wrap so it firmly sits in place. Here is an average CPU, you can notice the vast amounts of empty space.
2. Electronic components need special protection.
Most of us have learnt about Faraday’s cage in our high school. We get an anti-static bag to prevent electronics from harmful/strong electromagnetic fluctuations. Mainly data storage devices or graphics card as they can be corrupted. Do not take this lightly, over long distances especially in places like the USA or India, there’s actually a good chance of something going wrong.
3. Choose the appropriate packing material.
Well, we focused a lot on internal components but hardly on protecting external “hard”ware. Ironic as it is, never overestimate your component’s ability to be roughed up. As mentioned in my anime-like backstory, I made the mistake of using hard foam for my monitor, it ended up with a slight blackout at the edge due to a crack apparently from it being dislodged and rough contact with the raised part of the foam meant to hold it in place. Till today I remind myself to use SOFT FOAM for monitors and screens because it cannot have a focused impact. Also, use multiple boxes!
4. Do not stowaway your electronics along with any packages containing liquid!
Yes, this is where my second and the more painful heartbreak occurred. I packed it and transported it along with an alcohol crate. Things go wrong all the time, it’s easy to guess what happened next. A bottle broke, flooded the space, wet the cardboard box containing the motherboard as I had separated it from the CPU, and it was drenched. Never take the chance of stowing electronics along with ANY liquids no matter how confident you are in your packaging ability.
5. Last but not least, GET HELP!
Do not shy away from getting help, it can be your friends or professionals or people with prior experience. It pays to go the extra mile sometimes and most prefer to resort to a list of best relocation company in the locality which can be found over at:( https://www.assureshift.in/packers-and-movers-surat ). Saves you the trouble and most importantly, saying this with a wry smile, avoid guilt and a broken heart.
Thank you, hope this helps!
